The 5 Key Factors To Consider When Choosing a Sprinkler System
1. You should never have to water by hand.
A reliable automatic sprinkler system should never require watering by hand or with a garden hose - that's why they are called automatic and not manual! There are sprinkler contractors with low priced sprinkler systems that will try and fool you in to believing that they are a great value, but once it reaches the 80's is June with no rain, and 50% of your lawn is brown - it won't seem like such a good deal! Why would you spend any money on an irrigation system that keeps your lawn green only if it's raining or you water with a garden hose?
2. Your water source must be separate from your outdoor faucets
It's important that the water source for your sprinkler system should be separate from the homes outdoor faucets. This means installing new one inch plumbing from the water meter to the outside of the house. The contractor must use a licensed plumber to get the water out side of the home.
Be careful when choosing an irrigation service, because there are installers out there that will remove the faucet, add a backflow and use it for the water supply. Often times the pressure is so low the heads cannot rise out of the ground during peak demand. Again another cheap attempt to reduce cost!
3. Proper system design is crucial for your lawn
We cannot emphasize enough how important it is that you have a proper sprinkler system designed from the outset. Your system needs to be designed with head to head coverage, and it needs to have correct zone size to match your water supply. This means proper gallons per minute (gpm) and proper operating pounds per square inch (psi) of water pressure.
The heads need the proper nozzle size for even water distribution and the proper head for the area. Heads come in 3 general sizes based on the spacing distance measured in feet. A head that is designed for 25 feet to 45 feet is not meant to be crammed into a 10 foot space. This happens more often than you would think. Again another cheap trick to save money!
4. Sprinkler contractors are required to have a low voltage electrician
Irrigation contractors in Minnesota are required to be low voltage contractors and have a low voltage electrician on staff. Very few contractors have actually met this requirement! You can reference perspective contractors at www.electricity.state.mn.us. Click contractor directory, then click on “licensed technology systems contractors.”
5 To protect yourself from hiring the wrong sprinkler contractor ask these important questions:
- How long have you been in this business?
- Do you and your staff receive continuing education?
- Are you up to date on current equipment, controllers and water management solutions?
- Do you have a full time service staff? Most irrigations service providers are not the original installers, because the original installer is already out of business.
- Are your manufacturer's product warranties always honored and checked when repairs are done. NOTE: Most manufacturers provide 5 year warranties. Be sure your service provider if not the original contractors knows how old you system is.
